Oxford Winter Lights

The Oxford Winter Lights’ (OWL) Festival is over for another year and was reported to be a great success, with most of Oxford contributing in one way, or another. Almost all the businesses, plus many residential properties lit up their shop fronts, or their houses and gardens, for the week of June 15th to 23rd. Every one from The Oxford Farmers Market to the Art Galley was involved during the Festival week.

The Oxford Area School braved the cold mid-winter temperatures to perform outdoors for the enjoyment of those attending the Family Fun Night, as did the Rangiora Gypsy Belly Dancers, and the Pearson Park Line Dancers. The highlight for most of the younger members of the audience was the walk through Winter Wonderland, that a small army of volunteers created in just one morning on the tennis courts, beside Pearson Park. Much entertainment had been organised over the course of the event, including cookie creations, poi making, face painting, spring free trampolines and a bouncy castle.

“The whole Festival was a real credit to the community, but a special thanks goes to Shirley Farrell and Oxford Promotions without whose efforts the event could not have got off the ground,” commented one of the event’s co-ordinators, Lorna Price.
