Local athletes Jill Lang, Janelle Schnell and Sharon Morrison obtained outstanding results after competing in the Spring Challenge at Carters Beach, Westport on September 28th-30th. The trio competed in the six hour section of the Super Veteran category and out of nineteen teams in their category they emerged in first place. The overall results were even more amazing as the group came in at fourth place out of 224 women’s teams.
“Thanks to our support crew, and everyone that has made us sweat and stretch over the last few months,” commented Jill Lang, speaking for the team.
This event is one of the gems of New Zealand adventure racing, where up to 450-teams of three women take part in a race that includes rafting, mountain biking, hiking and navigation.
This event first began in 2007 in Hanmer Springs with 327 women entering, making it the highest participation for an adventure race in New Zealand at the time. The following year in Kaikoura 600 women took part. The event continued to grow as it toured to Nelson Lakes National Park, Motueka, Marlborough, Methven, Queenstown and by 2017 in Geraldine there was a new record of 600-teams!
The event caters for a range of ages and abilities with introductory and extended time stages available in each class. There were a number of competitors from the local area and the News congratulates them all.
