Women’s Hockey Triumph

A group of seventeen past and current Malvern Women’s Hockey Players travelled to Hamilton from March 3rd to 9th, to compete in the New Zealand Masters’ Hockey Tournament. The team entered the highly contested Womens 35+ Division; this is the first time in over twenty years Malvern has entered a Senior Women’s team into a National Tournament.

The Division was split into two pools (eleven teams altogether) with Malvern being seeded eleventh. First game up was against the reigning Champions Wellington: Malvern were delighted to win 1-0. The Team then travelled down to Rotorua to play against Waikato: which Malvern again won 6-1. Next game was against Tasman, this was reported to be an incredibly tough game, which Malvern narrowly lost 2-1. Tasman went on to play in the final. The final pool game was back in Rotorua against North Harbour which Malvern again won 2-1.

Malvern were placed second in Pool A and got to play off for third or fourth, in the final against Tauranga/BOP. It was reported to be a very wet and hard game but Malvern dug deep to come away with the win 3-1. The Team was thrilled to come third in a top quality Tournament with some great hockey teams competing.

The team especially thanks Val Watson who travelled with the team as Manager and helper, adding that she was a great asset to the Team. They also thank Jane Jenkins who was an inspirational player/coach as well. The women reported that the support from home was amazing.

“Much enjoyment and fun was had during the week and it wouldn’t have been possible with out some fantastic help from our great sponsors,” commented a spokesperson. The team is already planning to enter the tournament again next year.

Malvern Hockey has teams for all ages, in both Junior and Senior Divisions, for the upcoming Winter season.
