April Events at Local Library


Selwyn District Libraries have a range of fun events for children in April with Easter Storytime sessions planned and school holidays activities, plus other events for all ages.

Upcoming library events are:

Easter Family Storytime
Wednesday April 5th – 12th. All libraries celebrate Easter with
stories, songs and fun; with evening Storytime sessions from 6-7pm at:

  • Lincoln April 6th
  • Rolleston April 10th
  • Leeston April 12th

The free sessions are aimed at 2-7 year olds – families and older children are also welcome. Events are free, but booking is essential.

The April School Holiday Programme runs from April 18th – 27th.

Create with Craft

Autumn Leaves

  • Leeston April 19th:   10.30-11.30am

Make beautiful artwork with autumn leaves. The sessions will look at different types of leaves and discuss shapes and colours and the way they can be used to create different things. Sessions will include cutting, gluing, colouring, sharing ideas and lots of imagination! Sessions are suitable for children aged 5-14 years. **  *

Arm Knitting


  • Rolleston – April 18th
  • Lincoln – April 20th

Learn how to knit using arms! Using this super-fast technique, learn how to create a scarf in less than 90 minutes. Look at different textures, weights and yarns and see how they look. Materials supplied, no knitting experience required. Sessions are suitable for children aged 10-16.*

  • Tai Tapu Library

April 24th: 10.30 – 11.30am

The Challenge: Build a vehicle that can move a small load over a short distance. Sessions will look at different shapes and weights, and how these can affect how to build the vehicle. Suitable for children aged 5-10 years. **  *

**Children seven years and under must have active adult supervision.

*Programme is free but booking is essential.

Science Alive:

Crazy Contraptions

  • Rolleston

April 26th: 1.30 – 3pm

  • Leeston

April 27th: 10 – 11.30am

  • Lincoln

April 27th: 1.30pm – 3pm

Explore simple machines used in everyday life. Discover how these machines use different types of energy and forces to help them move and work. Children will use Lego® to build levers, gears and pulleys to design their own wheeled crazy contraption. Suitable for children aged 8-16. Cost $7, booking essential.

Libraries host a range of displays in April including Treasures of the Pacific from Canterbury Museum at Leeston Library, Easter displays at Lincoln Library and displays to mark Shakespeare’s birthday at Rolleston and Lincoln libraries.

All libraries will be closed on these upcoming public holidays: Friday, April 14th; Monday, April 17th and Tuesday, April 25th.
