Dog Morning Tea In Burnham

On Thursday, April 5th, Mt Maunganui based premium petfood manufacturer, Ziwi, opened a new facility in Burnham and to celebrate invited some local ‘dog-friends’ for a Dog Morning Tea. All shapes and sizes from Great Danes to Chihuahuas sampled some of the first products off the line.

A global leader in air-dried technology and the largest New Zealand exporter of premium pet food, Ziwi is a rapidly growing $40m export focussed business. The expansion into the South Island has come off the back of outstanding growth in export markets, as the world’s pet owners seek out more natural diets for their pets.

The dog morning tea also celebrated Ziwi’s new partnership with Canine Friends, a national pet therapy organisation of around 600 volunteers who share their dogs with people in hospitals, rest homes and hospices to bring joy and relief from loneliness.

Michael Dance, General Manager (marketing) said Ziwi was delighted to be supporting Canine Friends to expand their services to those in need. “As more and more people and organisations realise the value of a dog-friend to ease stress or isolation, Canine Friends’ services are in high demand and we are privileged to be able to help them expand their hugely worthwhile services across New Zealand. Being able to stroke and cuddle dogs brings so much happiness to people who may not be able to enjoy their own canine companion and there is a growing number of studies that highlight the benefits of pets on our mental and physical health.”

The facility opening will provide more than thirty jobs.

Along with the expansion into the South Island Ziwi has also partnered with ANZCO Foods to form a new joint venture operation producing pet treats and oral health products. The New Zealand Natural Chews and Treats Company will also operate out of the Burnham site to produce a range of natural, premium products for export markets.

”This is ANZCO’s first foray into the pet food segment and it will be providing Ziwi with access to large quantities of premium quality, grass fed products. The development of these treats and chews will enable the establishment of new international markets. There is huge potential for growth and we can do it all with New Zealand based, family owned manufacturing operations and the very best of New Zealand suppliers,” Managing Director, Richard Lawrence, explained.

Ziwi exports to over twenty countries, with its main markets being the USA, Australia and a rapidly growing China.
