Brookside Park, in Rolleston will be a hive of activity from 4pm March 17th through to 10am March 18th as members of the Selwyn community take part in the annual Relay for Life.

Relay For Life is an inspirational and fun fundraising event for everyone of all fitness levels, during which participants celebrate with survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and come together as a community to fight back against the disease.

Teams register to participate  in the event and they spend the weeks beforehand raising funds, which all go back to the Canterbury-West Coast region and assist the Cancer Society provide supportive care for cancer patients, their carers, whanau and friends, and  fund cancer research.

On the day teams set up camp for an overnight stay and team members take turns, relay style, walking/running around the track for eighteen hours while enjoying a carnival atmosphere and fantastic community camaraderie.

Relay for Life organisers are still looking for teams to join the Selwyn event. More teams not only equal more funds raised, but also equal more fun.

“It’s easy to put together a team, just get some friends together, jump on the website and register. You don’t even need to be fit,” a previous year’s participant commented.

“The Relay For Life really is something special, it’s such a unique way to raise both awareness and money for a very worthy cause. This is just my way of helping raise awareness and to show support to those that I have loved and lost,” they concluded.
