Lemonwood Grove Open

01.02.2017

Lemonwood Grove School on East Maddison’s Road Rolleston opened it’s doors on January 30th, 2017 with approximately eighty students from Years 1-8. The school has the infrastructure to eventually accommodate up to 750 students.

On Monday, January 23rd, a blessing was held at the school led by mana whenua.

School Principal Sean Bailey commented on the day. “This was a significant event for the school. We had a great attendance with around seventy people participating. To have the mana whenua here to bless the School was very special as the rich cultural heritage of the area will be a key aspect in our identity.

“The first pupil to be enrolled at the school for 2017, Angus Winter had the honour of re-placing the soil (taken initially at the site blessing earlier) during the tree planting ceremony, before everyone had the opportunity to walk around the School.

“The name ‘Lemonwood Grove’, has been gifted to the school by the local Rūnanga Taumutu. Tarata is a large Lemonwood Tree that grows 12-13 metres tall and is common from lowland forest to sea level. Its leaves have a lemony smell when crushed and it is one of many indigenous plants that grew successfully in the Selwyn area. There have been a lot of these trees planted around the School and the history of the tree will be a part of the students’ learning at Lemonwood Grove School.”
