Rolleston Combined Probus

Probus Clubs are established to provide friendship, fellowship and fun for retired and semi retired members of our community. There are over 1,700 clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia.

At the Rolleston Combined Probus Club’s  AGM in February, a committee of eleven was elected, with Claire Lee as President. The committee is tasked with providing guest speakers, outings and welfare support for the members.

Our guest speaker in March was Michael Parkin, from Otakaro, who gave us a visual presentation of the regeneration of the Christchurch CBD, including many completed projects, as well facilities in their infancy, such as the Metro Sports Facility. Questions from the floor covered time frames, access and parking. In April, our guest speaker was Helen Murphy, from Prisoner’s Aid. She gave an absorbing insight into how her small team interacts with new arrivals being deported from Australia and how they deal with all the administrative and personal details.

The February outing was to Garden City Helicopters, who have the contract to operate and maintain the rescue helicopters. About seventy of our members sat alongside the duty helicopter and heard talks from the pilot and paramedics. There was a presentation on how the operation functions and we visited the workshop. This was followed by lunch in the Good Horse Restaurant at the Avonhead Tavern.

In March we visited Living Springs Camp at Allandale, on the slopes of Banks Peninsular, overlooking Lyttleton Harbour. Planned in the early 1970’s as a church-based outdoor-camp for religious groups, it has grown to provide facilities for a wide range of community users such as primary schools, youth groups and the Armed Offenders Squad. It also hosts weddings in their conference centre. We watched school children doing the various activities, heard a presentation on the history of the land the camp is on and were invited to stay for lunch.

Rolleston Combined Probus (Combined just means men and women) meets at the Rolleston Community Centre on the second Tuesday of each month. Visitors are most welcome.
