Rolleston Teen Wins Award At Blue Light Camp

14 year old, Rolleston youth, Elijah Ligaliga was awarded a top prize; ‘Overall Merit Award’ at a recent Blue Light Life Skills Camp held at the Burnham Defence Force from June 11th to 15th.

Elijah beat a strong group of young people from around New Zealand to take the prize on the week long residential course.

Blue Light Life Skills Co-ordinator Kayla Murphy said, “Elijah was presented with the ‘Overall Merit Award’ as camp staff felt he had achieved significant and consistent improvement in attitude, self-discipline, self-confidence, team work and was always respectful to staff and fellow course members.”

The programme is run by New Zealand Blue Light in partnership with the New Zealand Police and New Zealand Defence Force. The programme provides fourteen to seventeen year olds with a residential based course delivering quality life-skills and leadership training.

It specialises in building self-respect, respect for others, working within boundaries, self-care, team work and problem solving. Up to twelve such courses are held around New Zealand each year, in Auckland, Taupo, Wellington and Christchurch.

Blue Light is a registered charity and community policing youth programme. For the past thirty years it has run programmes and activities for youth throughout New Zealand, free from drugs, alcohol and violence and has a strong vision of empowering youth.

All Blue Light programmes and activities are designed to; reduce the incidence of young people being an offender or victim of crime and to encourage better relations between young people, their parents, the police and communities they live in.

Blue Light originally began in Australia as a community policing initiative and remains very strong in all of the Australian States. It is now active in the Solomon Islands, East Timor, Cook Islands, New Zealand and Scotland.
