South Island School Road Race Champs

The South Island School Road Race Championships were held on July 6th – 7th at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, Christchurch with children competing from ages U13 to U20 in the two day event.

Individual time trials opened the events on Saturday with each competitor completing a three kilometre loop around the race track. Nick Rush from Rolleston College had an excellent day winning his U15 boys’ event with an outstanding time of 5:00.14.

Sunday was Road Race day, with close racing throughout, in perfect conditions; blue sky and no wind. Each age category raced in a bunch start over the specified distance for their age. This ranged from 10.3 kilometres for U13’s, to 38 kilometres for the U20’s.

Day two also saw more great results from Nick when he won the U15 boys – fifteen kilometre race in a time of 24:17.

“I felt super good in both of my races and being on super  form helped me a lot. The time trial went to plan with a good average speed and good time but the road race was a wee bit slow other than that both races were good. My next big race is the Southern Tour at the start of September but my main focus is on the National Road and Mountain Bike Championships in the next holidays,” Nick explained.

Rolleston College was placed tenth in the Hayden Godfrey Challenge Cup (Team Points Competition).

Well done to all those who competed from the Selwyn area.
